Nintendo DS users will have access to a free national Wi-Fi network in Japan: The head of Nintendo said the company will build 1,000 hotspots and will charge nothing for access. Third parties might charge for access to certain games or features they offer. This is a fascinating idea: would Starbucks open their network for game-only use to encourage on-site caffeine consumption by players?
Very neat idea. Nintendo could pay T-Mobile to use their network (not just at Starbucks, but at Borders, Kinkos/FedEx, airports, airline clubs, Hyatt and Redroof just to name a few). That would give them close to 6,000 HotSpots across the country.
We pitched something similar to Apple a couple of years ago: pay for hotspots to be free to Apple computer users/Mac.com subscribers, but not to PC users. The ROI was strong, but Apple didn't go for it.
Maybe when they launch the Wi-Fi iPod?
Silly idea,
Starbucks would dump T-Mobile if they would find out that the crazy gamers are crowding their stores, and are scaring away upper-class customers so fond of starbucks' "relaxing" atmosphere.
