Business trying this out as an "experiment" might also look at the SF wi-fi cafe map.
More than 40 cafes offer wi-fi free in SF, and after a year of my monitoring this thing almost nobody on the list has closed or stopped serving up wi-fi. This suggests that all these cafe owners think providing this service increases their profits.
