Qualcomm and Broadcom partner on Bluetooth: The partnership should put Bluetooth in more phones given Qualcomm's market position in developing CDMA technology. The article notes only 20 percent of GSM-based phones have Bluetooth built-in, while almost no CDMA phones have the wireless short-range standard included. (Of course, these numbers don't say market share or installed base -- must be market share.)
I notice that they don't say "_only_ 20%" in the article. Probably because it's only 20% of a huge number. The total _potential_ mobile wifi market (laptops + PDAs) is in the order of 40 million units per year. The total worldwide handset market is in the order of 400 million units per year. So if the 20% number is to be believed, the number of bluetooth handsets out there in a year is likely to be bigger than the entire laptop + PDA market (not just the subset with Wifi.) 'Nuff said. Good to see Qualcomm getting with the program at last, anyway.
BTW, I do realize that the 400 million number includes both GSM and other standards - but I am assuming that GSM must account for at least half of that number.
