Hotels with Broadband/Wi-Fi

New directory of hotels with wireless and wired Internet service: The directory is extensive, but it doesn't note which hotels have wired or wireless, or costs. It's a great starting point for planning a bandwidth-necessary trip, however. (Also, I can't get the JavaScript popup menus to work in the latest Apple Safari release, so I can't use the service.) The new site appears to have "scraped" the location lists of major wireless networks (see popup on site). Their list doesn't include the primary suppliers of wired access to the hotels.

In their defense - determing cost is almost impossible. You'd have to contact most properties individually. Both Cisco and Intel have larger, better lists on their sites.

I sent them a query -- see the exchange below:

Mr. Mao,

Regarding your suggestion on specifying which hotels offer WiFi access:
One of my goals is to turn a profit from this website. I'll be doing that
by offering Enhanced Listings, for a price, that will display additional
information about the hotels' amenities. The details will include: what
flavor of wireless they offer (a,b or g), if any; whether the access is
available in-room or just public areas; whether the connectivity is free or
available for additional charge. There are examples of what these Enhanced
Listings look like in the listings for hotels in Des Moines, Iowa. I've
temporarily upgraded those listings to offer additional info for attendees
of Gnomedex this July.

I thank you for taking the time to relay your suggestion. I'm always open
to comments and observations regarding the website. If anything else occurs
to you, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks,
Brent Baker

It would be a great help if you could break it down between wired and
wireless....

Update from PluggedInns.com
Based on the comments and suggestions of Mr. Ransom, Mr. Mao and others, I have begun two initiatives. First, I have contacted Cisco and Intel for directions to their hotel lists and permission to include any previously overlooked properties on my site. Additionally, I have begun the process of contacting every property individually to verify the availability of access, determining what type of access (Ethernet vs Wireless) is offered and whether or not there is an additional fee required for the access. With more than 3000 properties to contact and the limited amount of time I have to devote to this, it will take quite a bit of time, but my goal is to be the most up-to-date, comprehensive and accurate source of this information on the Internet. Wish me luck!

Another update from PluggedInns.com:

First snag. According to the following e-mail from Cisco, they don't have a list of hotels offering high speed access. I'll have to keep looking.

Dear Brent,
Thank you for contacting Cisco.
I know that some hotels advertise themselves as providing the internet access using Cisco equipment but this is not managed by Cisco so we do not ahve a list of the hotels participating in such a scheme.
So unfortunately I will not be able to support you on that matter.
I will now ahve to close this case.

Regards,
Pascal
